Submissions

Now accepting submissions for the May 2010 issue:

The theme of this issue is “Valuing a Liberal Arts Education.”  What is the value of a liberal arts education today? How can professors help students understand the importance of a liberal arts education?  What can professors do to instill a love of the liberal arts and, more generally, of learning?

Please send completed articles, proposals, abstracts, and questions to soasASpect@gmail.com. Articles incorporating multimedia are especially encouraged. Completed articles in Word, RTF or other appropriate format are due by Monday, April 12. Authors whose articles are accepted will need to supply the editors with a high-quality digital photo of themselves.

Articles should be roughly 1000-2000 words. Send ideas, abstracts, or full drafts to the Communications Team at soasAspect@gmail.com.

ASpect publishes three issues per academic year online at http://aspectwebsite.com . Articles are aimed at a wide, generally non-specialist audience of SSC faculty, alumni, and North Shore professionals.

Submissions Due: April 16 2010

Submit To: soasASpect@gmail.com

General Instructions

Articles of any academic focus–historical, controversial, philosophical, pedagogical, interdisciplinary, belletristic, or other–are welcomed. ASpect accepts multimedia submissions – still images, audio and video recordings.

Submissions not pertaining to an announced theme may be considered for a future issue on a more relevant theme.

Potential authors are encouraged to submit ideas to the Communications Team at soasASpect@gmail.com before a formal submission.

Information for contributors to ASpect
Effective September 1, 2008

The editors appreciate your interest in contributing to ASpect.  This document answers common questions from contributors, but if you need more information, please email the editors at soasaspect@gmail.com.  For the purposes of this document, “manuscript” is shorthand for any type of contribution, including one that contains no text.

Mission
ASpect (http://aspectwebsite.com) is published three times a year to provide a forum for thought and discussion for members of the School of Arts and Sciences at Salem State College.

Manuscript guidelines
As of the Fall 2008 issue, ASpect is an online-only publication. As such, new guidelines apply, guidelines more suited for web-based publication than print-based publication.

  • Types of submissions:
    • Most issues of ASpect have themes, and submissions on these themes are particularly welcome.  See (http://aspectwebsite.com/submissions/) for calls for papers.  The editors will consider submissions on other topics, though.
    • Traditional essays and articles are acceptable, but contributions designed for the Internet also are encouraged.  Submissions tailored to the World Wide Web may, for instance, be primarily photos with some commentary, or video or audio submissions, or other creative forms of web content.  In addition, articles and essays that are crafted for Internet publication should, unless inappropriate, include:
    • Text that is broken into smaller sections with section titles, headings and subheadings.
    • Embedded media such as photos, graphs, charts, artwork, audio files (.wav or .mp3), videos (QuickTime), etc.
  • Length: ASpect can include essays and articles of varying length, although most are 500-1500 words long.
  • Hyperlinks: Whenever appropriate, submissions should include hyperlinks.  The editors may add additional hyperlinks.
  • Style: An author is writing primarily for the faculty, undergraduates, and alumni of Salem State College and not for specialists in the author’s field.  Consequently, authors should engage the reader’s interest and use a style that is less formal than that of an academic publication but formal enough for a college publication.  A good model would be essays that appear in Time, The Atlantic Monthly, and other publications for the educated public.  Similar comments would apply about the style of language used in audio or video submissions.
  • Documentation: Include documentation wherever it would appear in an academic publication.  When the source materials are available on the Internet, documentation should be in the form of hyperlinks, but citations of sources that are unavailable online should appear as endnotes in the style of The Chicago Manual of Style.  Examples of this style are available at http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html.  No bibliography will supplement the endnotes.
  • Punctuation and grammar: Punctuation, grammar, and so forth generally will be edited according to the standards of The Chicago Manual of Style.  If for stylistic or other reasons the author desires not to have a submission edited in this fashion, the author should so indicate when submitting the manuscript.

Manuscript submission
  • Email submissions to soasaspect@gmail.com as .doc, .docx, html or RTF files.  Please include contact information.
  • If there is a problem submitting large files to the above email address, email the editors for alternative arrangements.

Manuscript status
After the editors have reviewed a submission, they will inform the author whether the submission is accepted subject to editorial revisions, accepted subject to authorial revisions, or rejected for publication.

Author’s photograph

  • ASpect publishes a photograph (a “head shot” of at least 72 dots per inch (DPI)) of each author.  The editors prefer for the author to provide a digital head shot at the time of submission or acceptance of a manuscript but may be able to arrange for the author’s photo to be taken.
  • On occasion, it might be appropriate to substitute an image related to the article for the head shot.  This must be discussed in advance with the editorial board of ASpect.

Readers’ comments

  • Readers can leave comments at the end of a piece that appears in ASpect. An author is encouraged to participate in the online discussion of his or her contribution.
